How Roofing Directors Are Growing Their Business Beyond Word of Mouth

Most roofing directors hit a ceiling. Word of mouth got the business off the ground, the van filled up, maybe a second crew joined, and then it plateaus. The phone goes quiet for a fortnight, you start bidding on Bark, you take jobs you wouldn't normally take, and the cycle restarts. This is a guide to a different way. Getting found on Google by people in your area who already want what you sell. We've written this guide for business owners, not SEO experts.

Why SEO works particularly well for roofing businesses

With leaks, slipped tiles and storms being half your work, half the demand for what you do is urgent, and all of it is local. When someone needs a roofer, they pick up their phone and search "roof repair Crewe" or "roofer Sandbach". The first place they look is Google, and whoever appears in the top three or four results gets the call.

That's a big opportunity if you're set up properly. It's a big problem if you're not. In an average UK town, hundreds of people a month are searching for roofing services. Most of those calls are going to the same handful of competitors. If your business isn't one of them, you're not in the running.

The other thing in your favour: most roofing websites are bad. They're slow, they look like they were built in 2012, and they don't tell Google what the business actually does or where it works. That means the bar to overtake them isn't as high as you might think.

What is local SEO?

Local SEO is the process of making your website and Google Business Profile appear when people in your area search for the services you offer. Unlike national SEO, the results depend on where the searcher is, not just what they typed. A search for "flat roofers" in Macclesfield shows different results to the same search in Manchester.

For a roofing business, local SEO breaks down into three jobs.

  • A good Google Business Profile

  • A website built to actually show up for local searches

  • Real reviews from genuine customers

Why SEO leads beat leads from anywhere else

A lead from Bark or Checkatrade has typed in their problem, hit submit, and triggered a notification on the phones of every roofer within twenty miles. By the time you ring, they've already had three other calls and they're treating it as a price comparison.

A lead from Facebook Ads is scrolling past dog videos and birthday messages to see your advert. They're not looking for a roof inspection right now, so why would they click it? And those that do... if you've run ads on Facebook before you'll know what they're like. Tyre kickers with no intent to spend money, just looking for the lowest price.

A lead from Google search is different. They took the initiative to search for your services, they clicked on your website, they read about you, they looked at your work, and then they picked up the phone. By the time you answer, you're answering questions from someone who's already most of the way to choosing you.

The reason we do SEO and not Google Ads is because 94% of users skip the sponsored results (Google Ads) to get to the organic listings (SEO).

In our clients' experience, the close rate on these leads is two to three times higher than on lead-app leads, and the jobs are often bigger. People who've taken the time to look for the work you do are ready to spend money.

What good can actually look like for a roofing business

We've taken a brand new website from 8 clicks a month to nearly 600 in a year, and from under 2,000 impressions to over 100,000.

Another client added more than £650,000 in attributable revenue from Google search over a single year. These are documented case studies, not estimates.

The numbers aren't the point on their own. The point is what they mean. A phone that rings consistently with people who already want to hire you, in the area you actually serve, without you having to chase anyone.

Why we're a sensible choice for roofing businesses

Three reasons it tends to work for clients like you.

You deal with us directly. There are two of us, Charlie and Patrick. No account managers, no ticket systems, no agency middlemen. You get a WhatsApp group with both of us, and we reply.

A brand new website is included as standard. Most roofing sites need rebuilding. We do that as part of the service, on Wix Studio so it's fast, mobile-friendly, and easy for us to update as new pages are needed. No separate fee and no upsell.

The guarantees. On standard contracts, we guarantee three things in writing.

  • The foundation work delivered within 60 days

  • Your first qualified enquiry within 120 days of the site going live

  • 100% return on your fees within 12 months

If we don't deliver, you don't pay. The exact terms are in the contract, but the principle is simple: we carry the risk so you don't have to.

Most of the trades businesses we work with started in roughly the position you're probably in now. Reliant on word of mouth, frustrated with lead apps, and not sure how to get found on Google without burning through a small fortune on Ads.
